Elegy for Simpler Times
Wired and Whimsy (Flutes)

Elegy for Simpler Times reflects on the unique experience of growing up alongside the rapid evolution of personal technology. For many in my generation, childhood was filled with electronic toys, handheld games, and simple robotic companions that inspired wonder and imagination. As we grew older, the internet transformed how we learned and connected, followed by mobile phones that placed the world at our fingertips. What once felt exciting and full of possibility gradually became an inescapable presence woven into every aspect of daily life.

The fixed audio part serves as a sonic timeline, incorporating recognizable technological gestures and sound assimilations that evoke different eras of digital culture. At times, the flutes engage playfully with these sounds, recalling the curiosity and delight of childhood encounters with technology. Elsewhere, they become increasingly reactive, interrupted, and overwhelmed as notifications, alerts, and digital intrusions accumulate.

The work traces a journey from nostalgia to unease. While it celebrates the creativity, connection, and excitement that technology has brought, it also acknowledges the anxiety of living in a world of constant communication and perpetual distraction. Through the dialogue between the performers and the electronic soundscape, Elegy for Simpler Times asks listeners to reflect on how technology has shaped our lives and whether our mental health and creativity has been lost amid the endless stream of information.
