Georgia Heart (PDF)

Georgia Heart was commissioned by HEART Music through sponsorship by the Athens Area Arts Council, in dedication to the pursuit of music education for all. HEART Music is a music education organization who sends music teachers into schools to work with music students for free. This gives students access to a professional musician who is a specialist on the student’s instrument on a consistent basis.

Georgia Heart takes inspiration from music these Georgia students typically first encounter before they pick up a band or orchestra instrument in the hopes to continue the excitement of being able to participate in the music surrounding their lives in Georgia.

The first movement, Beats, finds its influence from the Atlanta music scene of Hip-hop, Rap, and Trap music. This music is for advanced players, intended to be performed by HEART Music faculty to showcase to potential future musicians what’s possible.

The second movement, Flows, finds its inspiration from the music of Athens and beyond. Opening with a slower more lyrical theme, influenced by soul, the piece creates a nostalgia surrounding a slower paced Georgia lifestyle. The piece soon picks up a livelier pace,

following the Athens tradition of independent musicians established during the 1990’s. This movement is intended for the HEART Music students to participate in the performance alongside faculty or on their own.

There’s such a rich history of music throughout all the geographic regions of Georgia. This mission of Georgia Heart is to get students excited about participating in new music -and that includes any genre of music that inspires them to get out and play.
