Nicole Chamberlain’s Home for B♭ clarinet and piano was composed for clarinetist Michael Walsh, who commissioned the work while serving on the faculty at South Dakota State University. The sonata draws inspiration from the paintings of Harvey Dunn, whose evocative depictions of pioneer life capture both the hardship and resilience of settlers arriving on the northern plains. Reflecting on Dunn’s imagery, Chamberlain explores the emotional arc of establishing a home in an unfamiliar landscape. It's an experience marked by uncertainty, labor, and ultimately, belonging.

The three movements trace this journey. The first movement, Searching, evokes the uncertainty and vastness of the prairie landscape. The second movement, Building, centers on the labor and determination required to transform land into a home. The final movement, Thriving, celebrates the flourishing that follows perseverance, like spring that finally arrives after a long and brutal South Dakota winter. Through this progression, Home reflects on the enduring human impulse to seek belonging in new places. Inspired by the visual narratives of prairie settlement in the paintings of Harvey Dunn, Chamberlain’s sonata offers a musical meditation on the courage required to search, the dedication required to build, and the joy that emerges when a place finally becomes home.
